Ulaa Patagonia is located at the center of the North Patagonia Andean Biosphere Reserve, a natural area of over 22 million acres of land in Argentina and Chile, protected by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
This ecosystem, unique in Patagonia, presents stunning ecological diversity. With over 100 registered bird species, it is common to find little peutrens and Patagonian woodpeckers in the woods. Other interesting birds roaming the area are eagles, owls, and black headed vultures. Among the mammals of the area, the huemul and pudú (endangered local deers), the cougar, and the red fox are the most captivating.
The flora is rich and assorted in the forests that surround Ulaa Patagonia. Under huge coihues and cypresses, stunning white flowers grow. The guevín, or wild hazel tree, the white volqui vine, and the huautro sprinkle the landscape with unique features. Many of these plants are used by Mapuches, the local natives, for healing and medicinal purposes.
The rich flora in this ecosystem includes the incredible Lost Forest of the Alerces, towering trees over 6 thousand years old. This tree species, on the verge of extinction, is distinguished by its exceptional size, which may reach almost 56 feet in circumference, over 16 feet in diameter, and more than 200 feet in height.
These millenary Alerces are among the most ancient and imposing species on earth. They are witness to thousands of years of history still not deciphered by man.
